Santi celebrated Vesak (the full moon occasion of the birth, enlightenment, and parinibbana of the Buddha) last weekend, on Sunday 27th May. We were fortunate to have a mild, sunny, and beautifully still day; as well as the dedication, good will and support of a lovely group of people attending. We were very happy to have Ayya Sudhira from Sydney also join us for this special occasion.
The day commenced with the taking of the 3 Refuges and 5 Precepts, some auspicious Paritta chanting by the monastics, and a short Dhamma reflection on the meaning of Vesak and the significance of the Buddha’s teaching in this world.
Following this, the lay supporters offered a traditional rice pindapat to the nuns and a spread of beautiful food made from the heart for the community.
After enjoying the meal together, everyone participated in a circumambulation of the Bodhi tree and Stupa, using the occasion as a walking meditation practice, recollecting the qualities of the Triple Gem. Continuing the contemplative meditation, the adults then walked into the hall and were led in a lovely guided meditation and Dhamma reflection by Ajahn Jitindriya, (while some accompanied the children on a walk to the Big Cave). The opportunity for the group to sit quietly together in the hall, to still our minds and hearts, and to touch into the purity of the Dhamma within us all was appreciated by many.
The beauty, stillness and peace of the Santi forest and the joy and generosity in people’s hearts made it a warm and special Vesak day indeed. Reflecting on Vesak as the time in which the knowledge and wisdom of a Buddha arose and awoke in this world is important; a day to recognise the light and wisdom that is here, and which we can fully develop and awaken within ourselves.
With gratitude and blessings to all who came to share this special day with us at Santi.
And special thanks to the great ‘Dubbo crew’ who came on Friday to help prepare for the day in advance.
