The New Dhammacakka

There is a new addition at Santi which you might notice next time you drive in… It is a lovely Dhammacakka (Dhamma Wheel) motif, erected on the apex of the house, which is a significant symbol of the Buddhist tradition. This powerful symbol denotes the ‘turning of the wheel of Dhamma’ — the first teaching of the newly awakened Buddha given to the group of five disciples, its eight spokes representing the Eightfold Noble Path.

This beautiful offering was made to Santi by Sam and Shashika Wakista and family, who devotedly had this
1.2 mtre special design of the Dhammacakka made up by a local craftsperson and brought it to Santi on the Vesak weekend.

Just a few days later our local builder, Patrick Fitzgerald, was able to mount the wheel securely. Then, on Sunday the 9th of June, the community and visitors to the monastery dedicated the new Dhamma Wheel by gathering and chanting the Dhammacakka-ppavattana sutta, and sharing blessings with those who offered it and all who helped bring it into being here at Santi.

Our deep appreciation and gratitude goes especially to the Wakista family for this very special offering, which will serve as a focus and symbol of powerful significance for all who come to the monastery.

Sadhu Anumodana!
