October this year marks the 10th Anniversary of the first four Bhikkhunis ordained in Perth, WA: the Venerables Vayama, Nirodha, Seri, and Hasapanna.
Ayya Nirodha travelled to Dhammasara Nuns’ Monastery in WA to celebrate the special occasion on the 28th of October, also the Kathina day for the nuns’ community at Dhammasara.
We send our congratulations and respects to all four venerable nuns (now Theris – with ten vassas as Bhikkhunis), who courageously, and somewhat controversially, took that step ten years ago, supported and assisted by their preceptor/pavattini Ayya Tathaloka on the bhikkhuni side, and Ajahn Brahmavamso and Bhante Sujato on the bhikkhu side, and all the nuns and monks making up the dual sangha for the ordination procedure.
Dhammasara Nuns’ Monastery was established in 1998, and has now grown to a community of currently 15 nuns, 11 of whom are bhikkhunis.
