Log in as administrator<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>OR<\/p>\n<p>As a regular user, open the terminal:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">application-&gt;accessories-&gt;terminal<\/p>\n<p>Write the code line (or copy and paste):<\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">gksudo nautilus<\/pre>\n<p>Press Enter. Enter password when requested. A navigator window will open.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Copy the following location:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\/usr\/share\/X11\/xkb\/symbols<\/p>\n<p>Paste it into the &#8216;location&#8217; box, near the top left of your navigator. If there is no box labelled &#8216;location&#8217;, this is probably because you are viewing the button-based location bar. Press the icon at the far left that looks like a paper document with a pencil. This will toggle between button and text-based location bar. Then you can paste the address and press &#8216;Enter&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, you can navigate to the folder in the normal way, stating with the &#8216;File System&#8217; icon in your &#8216;Places&#8217; sidebar.<\/p>\n<p>Copy the file <strong>pi<\/strong>, and paste it into this folder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. In the same navigator window go to the following location:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\/usr\/share\/X11\/xkb\/rules<\/p>\n<p>With &#8216;Text Editor&#8217; open the file\u00a0<strong>evedev.xml<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Copy the following:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&lt;\/layoutList&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>Use the &#8216;Find&#8217; function (Ctrl + F) to find it.<\/p>\n<p>Copy the following lines and add them ABOVE the line   &lt;\/layoutList&gt; :<\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&lt;layout&gt;<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&lt;configItem&gt;<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&lt;name&gt; pi &lt;\/name&gt;<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&lt;shortdescription&gt;pli&lt;\/shortdescription&gt;<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&lt;description&gt;Pali&lt;\/description&gt;<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&lt;languageList&gt;&lt;iso639Id&gt;pli&lt;\/iso639Id&gt;&lt;\/languageList&gt;<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&lt;\/configItem&gt;<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&lt;\/layout&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>Save and close.<\/p>\n<p>Find the file <strong>base.xml<\/strong> in the same folder and do the same there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. In the same folder open with &#8216;Text Editor&#8217; the file\u00a0evdev.lst.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Find the layout list, either using &#8216;Find&#8217; or by scrolling down. At the end of layout list add:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">pi             Pali<\/p>\n<p>Save and close.<\/p>\n<p>Do the same in the file <strong>base.lst<\/strong> found in the same folder.<\/p>\n<p>You will now be able to find Pali in your keyboard layout:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">system-&gt;preference-&gt;keyboard-&gt;layout-&gt;add (+) -&gt; find Pali &#8216;By Language&#8217; and choose it.<\/p>\n<p>However, &#8216;Pali&#8217; will NOT appear in the &#8216;by country&#8217; list.<\/p>\n<p>When you choose Pali the system might give an error message &#8211; ignore it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Choose a &#8216;third level operating key&#8217;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This means you define which key will let you use the special characters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">system-&gt;preference-&gt;keyboard-&gt;layout options-&gt;Third level chooser<\/p>\n<p>Choose one option &#8211; that will be the key that will allow you to access the special character. We use &#8216;Left Alt&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. If you want to toggle between two sets of keyboard layouts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Add a layout from the list in the keyboard layout option. Don&#8217;t mark any of them as default.<\/p>\n<p>Then choose the switch option:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">layout option-&gt; other options button -&gt; layout switching -&gt; choose which ever combination you like.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, you can download instructions and code in zip format: <a href=\"http:\/\/santifm.org\/santi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/PaliKeyboardUbuntu.zip\">PaliKeyboardUbuntu<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Keyboard bindings<\/h4>\n<p>This is the list of keyboard bindings for the Pali\/Sanskrit Unicode characters. For the capitals, use Alt + Shift + [character].<\/p>\n<p>\u0101 = Alt a<br \/>\n\u012b = Alt i<br \/>\n\u016b = Alt u<br \/>\n\u1e41 = Alt m<br \/>\n\u1e45 = Alt g<br \/>\n\u00f1 = Alt j<br \/>\n\u1e6d = Alt t<br \/>\n\u1e0d = Alt d<br \/>\n\u1e47 = Alt n<br \/>\n\u1e37 = Alt l<br \/>\n\u1e25 = Alt h<br \/>\n\u015b = Alt z<br \/>\n\u1e63 = Alt s<\/p>\n<p>These keys will work if you choose, at step 5 of the installation, &#8216;left Alt&#8217; as the &#8216;third level operating key&#8217;.
