Long-term supporters Gia Hiew and Tam Ngan organised a\u00a0visit from 150 members from our Vietnamese community at the end of March to see the development of the\u00a0Buddha Rupa in the big cave. It was a beautiful day, with rice-Pindapata on the lawn, chanting in the big cave and a tour of the monastery.<\/p>\n

Ayya Patacara has been working on the\u00a0Buddha Rupa for about five months. She\u00a0was inspired by the Ghandaran-style\u00a0Buddhas. These were among the earliest\u00a0depictions of the Buddha, developed after\u00a0the 4th Century when the Greeks brought\u00a0the arts of stone-masonry to India. They\u00a0are mainly found in Afghanistan and\u00a0Iraq and were strongly influenced by\u00a0Hellenistic art.<\/p>\n

Ayya Patacara: \u201cI\u2019m using traditional\u00a0as well as modern tools to carve\u00a0it. Many people asked in the past\u00a0to donate statues of the Buddha in\u00a0brass and marble for the big cave,\u00a0but we decided to carve it from the\u00a0natural sandstone in the cave. Even\u00a0though it\u2019s not finished, it\u2019s nice that\u00a0people come to look and feel uplifted\u00a0by the presence of the Buddha.
