Day retreats at Santi

During the past few months, we hosted several day-events at Santi, offering people the opportunity to learn and practice Dhamma as a community. These programs included Dhamma talks, guided meditations, opportunities for Q&A, bushwalks, and a delicious potluck lunch.

On Christmas and New Years Day, many people joined us for the day to meditate and listen to Dhamma with likeminded people in Santi’s tranquil environment. It was a joyful, heart-warming, and meaningful way for us to connect, meet new friends, and welcome in the new year.
On 21st of January we had a day-event for teenagers and parents. We began the day by Ayya Analaya introducing mindfulness through some simple qi-gong movements followed by walking meditation, which segued nicely into sitting meditation. Venerable Karunika then gave a Dhamma talk on the theme of how to find meaning and real happiness in life, and how to care for our emotional well-being – reminding the parents that they need to look after themselves first and stop worrying about their kids!

The bushwalk to the Summer Palace with the young adults was delightful and allowed them to open up to us and ask questions. The few minutes of silence we shared together in the Big Cave at the end of the walk was magical. Parents went on a separate walk, and it allowed them to also talk more about themselves and their lives. The steep walk provided a practical opportunity to establish mindfulness in the present and the peaceful surrounds of the Santi Forest was relaxing for everyone. We closed the program with a beautifully guided gratitude meditation lead by Venerable Pasanna.
We also co-hosted the Family Wellbeing Retreat in February (18th) with Tina Ng and her team from the Metta Centre. The program consisted likewise of mindful movements, meditation, and a fun ice-breaker activity that challenged participants to shift their perspective (a critical skill in any relationship). We had an incredible buffet spread for lunch, followed by a Dhamma talk given by Venerable Karunika about the importance of skilful communication and right speech in family life. After the bushwalk, we went to the Big Cave, did some chanting together, and then steeped ourselves in silence. Tina led a lively panel discussion with the nuns and facilitated private interviews for the retreat participants. It was a very enriching day and a reminder for all of us that Dhamma practice and family life go hand in hand.

Going forward we wish to offer Day Retreats once a month at Santi.
Buddhist teachings are becoming popular amongst people of Poland and Ayya Karunika gave zoom teachings to Polish Early Buddhist Society on 29 of January 2023. Ayya Pasanna gave zoom teachings to New Zealand Bhikkhunī Sangha Trust on 9 of January 2023.
We participated in the Chinese New Year celebrations at Dhamma Home with a group of Vietnamese supporters. Ayya Karunika offered a Dhamma talk of the highest blessings (Mangala sutta).

By giving, one becomes dear,
one follows the duty of the good;
the good self-controlled monks
always resort to one.

They teach one the Dhamma
that dispels all suffering,
having understood which
the taintless one here attains nibbāna.
